Most toothpaste commercials showcase beautiful looking people and models that try to influence you to buy a wide range of products. What’s the one thing you notice about them? Their smile! They capture you with sparkling smiles that reveal a perfect set of white teeth – the kind of teeth you’ve always wanted.

And that’s probably why you’re reading this blog post. You need information on how to make your teeth white. Here are the 5 best natural teeth whitening diy tips.

Teeth whitening is a trending topic among almost all age brackets today.

Check these stats out: in 2015, more than $11 billion was spent on teeth whitening in the US. This is in addition to an extra $1.4 billion spent on at-home products.

This shows how valuable white teeth are to people. If you are seeking natural ways to whiten your teeth, we’ve put together a collection of best tips for you.

Why your teeth look yellow

Your teeth start to yellow and lose their white shine for several different reasons. As you begin to age, dentin (the layer underneath your enamel) yellows naturally. This causes your teeth to yellow on the outside, as well because your enamel is a reflection of what your dentin looks like on the inside.

Another major teeth yellowing culprit is the food you eat which can stain your enamel. Coffee, tea, wine…yeah, all the best things in life can stain your teeth. Soda, berries, beets. All of these things plus many other foods and drinks can stain that gorgeous smile of yours.

Your teeth can also get yellow from the build up of plaque. Plaque is a whitish/ yellow color which can make the teeth appear yellow. Even worse, the food and drink you eat can stain plaque different colors too. Have you ever seen a child with orange stained teeth? More than likely, they had plaque on their teeth and then ate some type of cheddar snack such as Cheetos. Ever seen a kid with blue tee th? They more than likely drank some blue koolaid which stained their plaque blue. I work primarily in pediatrics and I see this on the daily.

Once the plaque sits on the teeth for a long period of time, it calcifies and hardens into what we call calculus or tartar. This substance is a dark yellow to brown color. Calculus must be removed by a dental professional because it is too calcified and hard to remove at home with a toothbrush.

Grinding could be another reason that your teeth yellow early because it triggers premature aging and dentin shrinkage.

How to whiten your teeth naturally – 5 best natural teeth whitening DIY tips for you

While there are many teeth whitening products available, even many that I HIGHLY recommend (BURST whitening strips, WYT Whitening) many people just want to whiten teeth naturally at home. Here, you’ll find teeth whitening at home tips. Sit tight and keep reading as we tell you how to whiten your teeth naturally:

  1. Use a good stain-removing toothbrush

At Toothbrush Life, we always advocate for the best toothbrushes because we believe that maintaining healthy teeth and a healthy mouth begin with good oral care. Toothbrushes are vital oral care tools and using a good one can help to get rid of stains on your teeth. I personally and professionally recommend the BURST sonic toothbrush. It has safe charcoal bristles which help naturally remove stains and whiten teeth. There are a TON of great and unique features of this brush. Check out my full blog post review on it plus get a $30 off coupon in this post> BURST.

  1. Baking soda can help

Another natural teeth whitening method is to brush your teeth with baking soda. Most commercial whitening toothpastes have baking soda in them because of its natural whitening features. It can be useful for scrubbing stains off of the surface of your teeth. Baking soda also builds the level of alkaline in your mouth which hinders bacterial growth. Here’s a study that shows that toothpastes which contain baking soda can create whitening effects better than standard toothpastes with none. I brush my teeth with baking soda about once a week to keep them white!

  1. Activated charcoal

In contrast with any teeth whitening kit you see in stores, using activated charcoal powder is a great way to naturally remove stains from the surface of your teeth. Make it into a paste and smear it onto your teeth, then, rinse off after a few minutes. If you are dealing with stains that result from your use of tobacco or other foods, the charcoal teeth whitener process may be a good option.  Please note that you need to be sure that the charcoal you are using in not abrasive to the teeth. Most activated charcoal powder has an RDA value of 70 which is relatively low on the dental abrasivity scale. This is actually lower than whitening toothpaste which is great and should be safe for enamel.

  1. Apple cider vinegar

For hundreds of years, apple cider vinegar has been acclaimed for it cleaning properties. It contains acetic acid, an active ingredient that is known for killing bacteria. Vinegar has antibacterial characteristics that make it ideal for maintaining a clean mouth as well as whitening your teeth. Using apple cider vinegar may cause your enamel to wear off, so, avoid applying it to your teeth daily. It can also be used as a mouthwash when diluted with water. After swishing for a couple of minutes, use plain water to rinse your mouth.

  1. Use Strawberries

Now, this is one teeth whitening method I personally do NOT recommend but I will still share it with you. Because if I don’t I’m sure I’ll get a message asking me about this method. I don’t recommend this method because I believe that this could damage the enamel.

Many celebrities have popularized the use of strawberry mixed with baking soda as one of the best teeth whitening strategies. Strawberry contains malic acid which many claim can get rid of teeth discoloration, leaving stains to be dealt with by the baking soda. You can use strawberries to exfoliate while giving your teeth a whiter look. Take care not to apply this teeth whitening method too often so that do not harm your dentition.  Again, I do NOT recommend this at home teeth whitening method.

Preventing tooth stains is a better idea

The best teeth whitening method is prevention. Yes, taking steps to keep the stains from appearing in the first place is a great way to ensure that your teeth remain white for as long as possible. As you age, your teeth will naturally begin to yellow. You can’t really avoid this but you can adopt measures that will prevent stains from showing up.

  • Cut down on your intake of foods and beverages that can stain your teeth. Things like soda, red wine, as well as dark berries, and coffee have high stain-causing tendencies.
  • Whiledrinking beverages, use a straw when possible so that you limit the contact that your teeth has with the liquid.
  • Rinse your mouth out with water to neutralize acidity in the mouth after every meal and drink. Then brush your teeth after eating anything that could cause stains. This will go a long way to limit whatever negative effects they will have on your teeth coloration.
  • If you smoke or chew tobacco, you are at high risk of discoloring your teeth. Work out a plan to help you limit or quit your use of tobacco if you wish to keep your teeth from yellowing.
  • Avoid foods that are rich in sugar. Limit your intake of such kinds of foods where possible.
  • Use a safe, effective toothbrush embedded with charcoal bristles to naturally remove and prevent stains on your teeth.
