Home oral care is extremely important during chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Be sure to brush your teeth and gums very gently at least two times a day with a soft bristled toothbrush. Floss at least one time daily. Take your time and do this gently as the mouth will most likely already be sore.
The mouth will likely be sore and may have ulcers but it is very important to keep a clean and healthy mouth. If the oral heatlh is not in good condition, more pain and other oral health problems may arise.
A prescription fluoride is recommended with chemotherapy due to the treatment causing extreme dry mouth. Extreme dry mouth can create an environment for tooth decay to thrive.
Avoid oral care products with alcohol as they can burn and further dry out the mouth. Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water to help with dry mouth. Suck on sugar free candy or chew sugar free gum to stimulate salivary glands. Use a salivary spray to help keep the mouth moist. Avoid eating foods that are spicy, or acidic and avoid alcohol.
Be sure to move the mouth around and exercise it daily to keep your jaw from becoming stiff during treatment. Lastly, be sure to visit your dentist frequently so they can monitor your oral health.
