Floss. Floss. Floss. Please for the love of your teeth, floss. Flossing is so, so important. Before hygiene school, I never really understood the importance of flossing. I thought the purpose of floss was only to get out food that was stuck between your teeth. Boy oh boy, I was so wrong. Now I make sure to tell all of my patients how important flossing really is.

If you don’t floss you are missing out on cleaning almost half of your tooth’s surface. Your teeth have 5 surfaces. The sides (in between teeth), the top chewing surface, the cheek side you see when you smile and the tongue side. Even if you brush your teeth 10 times a day, your toothbrush isn’t cleaning well in between your teeth. The bristles just don’t fit in those small spaces. So if you aren’t flossing, you are not cleaning all of your teeth. This is one reason why so many people suffer from bleeding gums, gum disease and cavities in between their teeth.

11) Oral Care & Toothbrush Storage

So I don’t really consider this an oral care product per se, but this is too cool not to share. This is like an oral care and toothbrush storage station. We have 4 electric toothbrushes in one bathroom and this handy toothbrush storage keeps everything neat and tidy! Everyone has their own section and the toothbrushes are off of the counter and kept hygienic.

You can buy different sizes. In one bathroom, I have a 4 brush holder and the other bathroom, a 2 holder station.

I love that this one comes with cups so my kids can get water too. The cups hang upside down to keep them clean. Also has storage so you can keep toothpaste, floss and other items up and out of the way.

You can also see my toothpaste squeezer on the wall. This keeps the toothpaste neat and it automatically squirts out the perfect amount onto the brush. My kids love this. Only downfall is that not all the toothpastes fit but luckily, most do.

12) Tongue Scraper

Sure you can brush it with your toothbrush, but have you ever used a tongue scraper? They are a game changer when it comes to scraping plaque off of the tongue.

Plaque on the tongue can be a huge source of bad breath. Use a tongue scraper daily for best results.

According to a source, the tongue should be part of daily oral‐hygiene procedures. It is clear that the tongue forms the largest niche for microorganisms in the oral cavity.

There are many benefits of using a tongue scraper:

• Remove plaque and debris off of your tongue

13) Dry Mouth Products

A dry mouth can be uncomfortable and lead to many dental problems. Saliva helps reduce the pH in our mouths and wash away food and bacteria. Without saliva you have an increased risk for cavities. Be sure to talk with your doctor to find out source of your dry mouth so you can try and fix it. In the meantime, use xylitol chewing gum to help stimulate saliva and drink plenty of water.
